The European Commission published its roadmap for ensuring lawful and effective access to data by law enforcement authorities on 24 June 2025, a key deliverable under the ProtectEU Internal Security Strategy. With 85% of criminal investigations now relying on electronic evidence, the roadmap addresses six focus areas including digital forensics, lawful interception, data retention, decryption, standardisation, and AI solutions for law enforcement. The Commission plans to carry out an impact assessment to update EU data retention rules, present a technology roadmap on encryption in 2026, and promote AI tools to enable authorities to process large volumes of seized data.
