California Enacts Law Requiring Police Disclosure of AI-Generated Reports

California Governor Gavin Newsom signed Senate Bill 524 on 10 October 2025 requiring police officers to disclose when generative AI tools are used to write reports. The legislation prohibits vendors from selling or sharing information provided by police agencies to AI systems and mandates retention of first drafts to enable judicial and defence attorney review. The law addresses concerns about errors and omissions in AI-generated reports that could directly impact suspects and defendants in criminal proceedings.
