Japan Launches Body-Worn Camera Pilot Programme for Police Officers

Japan’s National Police Agency launched a pilot programme in August 2025 to trial body-worn cameras for police officers. A total of 102 wearable cameras are to be purchased, including 65 for local areas, 19 for crowd control, and 18 for traffic divisions. For crowd control officers, cameras will capture video of situations with many people and feeds will be monitored remotely in real-time. Traffic camera footage will be used to educate drivers on road violations. The cameras may attach to different body parts including head and chest, with specific types, data storage periods, and operational practices to be decided following evaluation of the pilot.
