EU AI Act compliance: August 2026 deadline and penalty exposure for high-risk deployers

A legal analysis published 7 April outlines the compliance requirements entering into force on 2 August 2026 for high-risk AI systems under AI Act Annex III. Organisations deploying systems in law enforcement, biometrics, border management or justice must finalise conformity assessments, CE marking and EU database registration by 2 August or face penalties up to €35 million or 7% of global turnover for the most serious violations. An appliedAI study found 40% of 106 assessed enterprise AI systems had unclear risk classifications.
