Digital Evidence Overload: Police and Prosecutors Struggle with Exponential Growth in Body Camera and Surveillance Data

A feature investigation finds that law enforcement agencies in the US are experiencing a 600% increase in audio and video evidence over five years, with even minor misdemeanour cases generating terabytes of digital material. Body camera footage, HALO cameras, ALPR data and mobile phone downloads are creating massive evidentiary backlogs that strain storage, interoperability and justice timelines. Prosecutors and defence attorneys warn that systems are not communicating effectively with one another.
