A peer-reviewed paper presented at DFRWS EU 2026 reports on a survey of digital forensic unit (DFU) practitioners. Despite growing incidence of deepfake-related cases, the results show a substantial gap between the technical capabilities of available detection tools and the operational readiness of forensic units to deploy them. The paper calls for structured investment in training and tooling.
