African organisations encountered an average of approximately 2,700 cyberattacks per week in Q1 2026, down 22% from nearly 3,500 per week in Q1 2025, according to Check Point Software data cited by Dark Reading. Despite the decline, African organisations continue to experience a higher attack intensity than the global average of 2,000 per week. Latin America has now overtaken Africa as the riskiest region by attack volume. Kenya and Morocco both saw drops of more than 50%, while Ethiopia saw a 29% increase. Nigeria, the most attacked African country, averaged 4,200 attacks per week per organisation in 2025 but saw a 12% decrease in March 2026. Cybersecurity experts attribute the African improvement to better defensive preparation by organisations and a shift in criminal targeting toward Latin American infrastructure and financial systems. The INTERPOL IOCTA and Africa Cyberthreat Assessment frameworks have accelerated cross-border information sharing between African national police cybercrime units since 2025.
