US CBP Expands Mobile Facial Recognition to Local Police Through New App

U.S. Customs and Border Protection quietly launched Mobile Identify, a mobile face-scanning app for local law enforcement officers under the 287(g) immigration programme. The app extends federal biometric surveillance infrastructure to local policing, linking police departments to DHS border-based databases. Civil liberties groups warn of risks including false matches, racial bias, and warrantless surveillance. The app’s data governance, retention periods, and oversight measures remain unclear.
